Today . . .

. . . started off being very misty

the sun struggled to shine

but when it finally did, it showed up the cobwebs on the fence panels, and burned the dampness out of the wood

I found this leaf on the top of the log store

this is where it has fallen from

most of the flowers in the garden are looking pretty sorry for themselves

but out by the canal at Seend Cleeve, the sun shone, and all was well with the world

Remember this spot, Janice? This is the first time I've been back here since we had lunch together, over two years ago. And for the benefit of my friend Chrissy, this is The Barge Inn, although today we didn't partake.

All Cannings

We try to get out and about as often as possible to enjoy the beautiful countryside that we live in. Yesterday we went to the village of All Cannings, in Pewsey Vale. We parked the car by the small village green, and were passed by what Rog described as a stampede of horses.

A walk along the High Street brought us to our first port of call, The Kings Arms, a pub with one of the best landlords in the area.

After enjoying some tip top condition beer, Wadworths Horizon, a lovely pale bitter, we parked at the top end of the village to eat our sarnies. Not far from the ever present Kennet and Avon Canal, the land here is fairly low lying so the bridge over the canal is pretty high. If you click on the picture to enlarge you'll also see the Alton Barnes White Horse on the hillside behind.

Also not far from Salisbury Plain, we are not surprised to hear first and then see a Chinook

Totally unfazed by the noise, this horse just carried on grazing

As did the llamas in the next field

I did a double take on the way back home, yes this is exactly what it looks like, a field of rape in flower - at the end of October!!!

Week 25/52 170-176/365

Wow, dont the weeks just fly by so quickly! I'm almost halfway through this 365!

170/365 I love this image, it's painted on the side of Shane's Castle, which was once a tollhouse by the Northgate into Devizes. Now it sits between two very busy roads at a difficult junction.

171/365 Not many flowers left in the garden now, but this giant daisy is bucking the trend

172/365 I'm participating in a photography challenge devized by "A kitten called Betty", one of the subjects is "hands", this is one that I took, but not the one I posted in the challenge, which you can view here.

173/365 Minutes after a torrential downpour

174/365 Tried this new sauce, it was yummy with chicken thighs.

175/365 During wartime, when it was envisaged that the German army would invade southern Britain, The Kennet and Avon Canal was seen as a barrier to the advancement of the army by blocking all the bridges with these tank traps, most of which have just been moved to the side of the road rather than destroyed.

River Cottage veg every day

I'm a huge fan of Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall (actually, I'm not huge, just a little bit, well OK more than just a little bit, overweight) so last Sunday I watched the first installment of his new campaign to try to encourage us to eat less meat, on Channel 4. I enjoyed it so much I straight away ordered the book to go with the series, found it on Amazon, half-price (£12.50).

I'm never gonna be a vegetarian, I like meat too much to give it up altogether, but I have, over the last few years, cut down to only having meat once (max) a day. Rog, on the other hand, is very much a meat with (almost) every meal man, so trying to encourage him to eat less meat is likely to be an uphill struggle for me, but I am determined to try.

Almost as soon as the book was out of its wrapping I had a shopping list of things to buy. I'm going to start off gently, so this week I aim to make something (not sure what yet) with polenta, and also I'm going to make a squash and chickpea stew. I'll let you know how they turn out!

The second installment is this evening on channel 4 at 8pm, watch and enjoy.
Oh, and by the way, as you can see on the book cover, Hugh's had a haircut, and looks a bit more sensible and almost grown-up now!
