The lovely Wiltshire village of Urchfont, set on the northern edge of Salisbury Plain, holds a Scarecrow Hunt every year over the Mayday Bank Holiday weekend. Each year the exhibits are on a different theme, and this year's theme was "pairs". Following a map of the village and using cryptic clues, you had to identify each scarecrow and name its pair. We spent a most enjoyable (and thankfully dry and sunny) morning there yesterday, and here are just a few of the 53 scarecrows.
Napoleon, of Napoleon and Josephine
Pinky, of Pinky and Perky
Jill, of Jack and Jill
C3PO, of R2D2 and C3PO
Becks, of Posh and Becks
Peter Pan, of Peter Pan and Wendy
Tweedledum, of Tweedledum and Tweedledee
Andy Pandy, of Andy Pandy and Teddy
Holmes, of Holmes and Watson
and Jess, of Postman Pat and Jess.
If you are in or near Wiltshire over this weekend, its well worth a visit. Free off-road parking is available, and in the centre of the village you will find a beer tent, burgers, ice cream, a hog roast and a plant sale. As well as the main scarecrow hunt, there is also a separate hunt for younger children.
All in all a fun day out for the whole family.
