Last autumn my 85 year-old Mum told me that if you pick green tomatoes and put them next to ripe ones, they will ripen. I have to admit at the time I took it with a pinch of salt, but she was partially correct, as long as they are mature they will ripen, if not then they wont. I think its all to do with pheromones, but here is a link to wikipedia on what to do with your vast crop of green tomatoes.

oh most definately, my Mum has always done this so that the tomotoe plants don't get too weighed down - she takes the big green one off and puts them on the windowsill, it works even if they are not next to ripe ones...and come autumn the whole kitchen windowsill is covered in ripening tomotoes LOL
Also any fruit that is next to bananas will ripen the same way which is why they say to keep your bananas on their own!
I was told to put them in a paper bag. Some of mine are tiny but red and some are huge and green. Some split as they are ripening off the plant and some go wrinkled!
Been a funny year for tomatoes all round.
My mum used to put them in a brown paper bag with a banana. You're right though, it'll only work if the tomatoes are mature.
We plan on growing tomatoes next year so I've bookmarked the wiki link as I'm sure we'll have bundles of green ones!
